Five Vietnamese fishing boats arrested in Natuna waters

P

ersonnel from the Maritime Affairs and FisheriesMinistry fleet under the command of the Marine Resources and Fishery ControlDirectorate General have arrested five Vietnamese fishing boats for illegallyfishing in Natuna waters, Riau Islands.

'€œI appreciate the success of the operation by patrol vessels from the ministry. It shows that illegal fishing in Indonesia waters by foreign boats is still quite frequent,'€ Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Sharif said that aside from causing losses to the state, such illegal fishing activities also affected the sustainability of maritime and fishery resources in Indonesia.

'€œIllegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities have caused larger losses to our country, especially among fishermen.'€

The situation was made worse by the fact that poachers frequently used bombs and potassium cyanide to catch the fish, thereby causing severe damage to the existing marine and fishery resources, he said.

The damage to the marine ecosystem would later reduce the overall fish population and directly affect the welfare of Indonesian fishing communities, he added.  (yln)
