runojoyo Airport in Sumenep on Madura Island, East Java was inaugurated on Monday for commercial short-haul flights connecting Sumenep and the provincial capital of Surabaya.

Sumenep Regent Busyro Karim said that since 2010, the airport's 1,160-meter runway had only been used as a training ground for the Merpati Pilot School.

"The first commercial flight will be made after Idul Fitri, or in August 2014. Apart from the Sumenep-Surabaya route, the airport wants to link Sumenep and Bali," he said on Monday.

Sumenep regency is located in the eastern part of Madura Island. The regency has a total area of 2,093 square kilometers with around 1 million residents. Sumenep has 126 islands, 38 of which are inhabited. '(nfo/nvn)
