The Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced former Foreign Ministry secretary-general Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat to two years and six months in prison for embezzlement in relation to 12 international meetings and conferences organized by the ministry in 2004-2005.
Sudjadnan, who is also former Indonesian ambassador to the US, was also ordered to pay a Rp 100 million (US$8,691) fine or spend an additional two months in prison.
'I declare the defendant guilty of collectively committing corruption repeatedly,' presiding judge Nani Indrawati said as quoted by kompas.com when she read out the verdict in court in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The judge said Sudjadnan's actions were counterproductive to ongoing efforts to eradicate corruption and create a government free of corruption, collusion and nepotism.
Nani further said Sudjadnan's actions worsened Indonesia's image and gave a negative image to goods and service procurement in the country. That the diplomat had been involved in a previous graft case was also among aggravating circumstances that resulted in the sentence.
In January 2011, the court sentenced Sudjadnan to one year and eight months in prison for his role in the marking-up of the renovation costs of the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore between 2003 and 2004.
The judge said that among mitigating circumstances was that Sudjadnan had made a contribution to the state and country in creating international partnerships, especially after bombings in Bali and other regions. The defendant also voiced remorse for his misdeed and was cooperative in court, she added.
In the verdict, the panel of judges said Sudjadnan had not been proven guilty of embezzling Rp 330 million as accused.
However, Sudjadnan was found guilty of helping to enrich the ministry's finance bureau head, Warsita Eka, and the ministry's budget division head, I Gusti Putu Adnyana, by Rp 165 million each.
Sudjadnan's sentence was lower than Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors' demand of three years' imprisonment and a Rp 200 million fine or an additional four months in prison. Both Sudjadnan and the prosecutors said they would consider appealing. (fss/ebf)
