eputy chief of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), Agus Santoso, said the center welcomed the verdict issued by the Supreme Court (MA), sentencing Papua Police officer Adj. First Insp. Labora Sitorus to 15 years' imprisonment, almost doubling the eight years that Sitorus had previously been sentenced to by the Papua High Court.
'We welcome the verdict.' Agus said on Thursday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said the PPATK was grateful to the panel of Supreme Court justices who had reviewed Sitorus' case, and had included in its ruling a conviction for money laundering.
Sitorus was found guilty of illegal logging, fuel smuggling and money laundering. Suspicions of corruption were first noted by the police's internal affairs following the PPATK's findings in May 2013 that Sitorus, a low-ranking police officer, had around Rp 1 trillion (U$102 million) in his bank account.(dic)
