Islands in focus: Zoo security beefed up as Bali starlings go missing

T

he Surabaya Zoo management says it has heightened security measures following the loss of two Bali starlings, locally known as Jalak Bali.

Surabaya Zoo spokesperson Agus Supangkat said management was implementing tighter security measures to prevent the theft of more of its animal collection from occurring in the future.

'€œWe have stationed Public Order Agency [Satpol PP] officers in each corner of the zoo, starting from the entrance to the inner areas of the zoo. Apart from that, each security post will be guarded by a zookeeper,'€ said Agus on Tuesday.

As reported earlier, two Bali starlings went missing from their cages at the Surabaya Zoo last Saturday. This was the fifth such case of missing birds since 1998.

The Surabaya Zoo, which was the biggest zoo in Asia in the 1980s, has 13 breeding cages that measure 2 by 2 meters each from side to side and 180 centimeters in height.

Following the theft, the number of Bali starlings in the Surabaya Zoo is down to 176 individuals.

The head of the Surabaya Police'€™s criminal investigation division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Sumaryono, said the police were investigating the missing Bali starlings.

'€œWe conducted a crime-site examination and found damages to the cages as if they had been forcefully opened. We have also questioned three witnesses, namely the head of the avian and reptiles division, Siran, and two keepers,'€ he said.
