O

ne of sites being blocked by the government for its allegedly radical content, hidayatullah.com, asked on Sunday that the Communications and Information Ministry limit the censorship of the site to the problematic uniform resource locator (URL) of particular content.

"The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) said there were two contents linked to radicalism being reported to the ministry. Why can't they just block those contents instead of the entire website?" hidayatullah.com group chief editor Mahladi said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He deplored the blocking of his website, which he said contained important content that was being silenced.

"All this time our content has been positive. Then, just because of these two alleged instances of radical content, is it fair to block the entire website?" he said.

Mahladi also expressed disappointment in the lack of a warning or explanation from government regarding the block.

"Such an arbitrary blocking will divide society and encourage the public to be suspicious of pesantren [Islamic] boarding schools, which are not radical."

Mahladi said the group has pesantren all over Indonesia and the fiasco had caused some parents to withdraw their children from classes.

"We will file a police report against the ministry and the BNPT for violating the Criminal Code [KUHP] and the [2008] Electronic Information and Transaction Law [ITE law]," he said.

Hidayatullah.com is one of 19 websites being blocked under the ministry's order, based on a request made by the BNPT. (nvn)
