Ministry proposes recruitment of 10,000 lecturers

Technology, Research and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir has asked for an additional 10,000 lecturers to be recruited.

'€œWe have requested the recruitment of more lecturers; twice the number recruited last year, which was 5,000,'€ said Nasir as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday.

Nasir suggested the lecturers be added to this year'€™s quota for recruitment into the civil service. He added that the demand for lecturers is high as the country is home to 3,987 universities and other higher education institutions.

The lecturers would not be limited to state universities, joining masters and doctorate programs in private universities also.

Nasir added that the current proportion of Indonesia'€™s lecturers holding a doctorate degree is less than 15 percent, which, he argued, would affect the development and quality of higher education in the country.

Lecturers with doctorate degree are the key to success, according to Nasir, when the ASEAN Economic Society (MEA) starts up. His ministry is currently assisting lecturers who are looking to pursue doctorate degrees. (rad/bbn)
