AYAPURA: Thirteen inmates from the Abepura correctional facility, Papua, escaped on Friday by forcing through the main door during visiting hours scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The prison's chief warden Bagus Kurniawan said that before the escape, three inmates asked for permission to meet the section head for consultancy. As they were about to enter the relevant room, however, two of them turned left to the visitors' room. When an officer warned them, one of the inmates threatened him with a sharp weapon before shouting a specific phrase.
A number of other inmates then simultaneously broke through their doors within the facility and escaped through the main door.
In the hunt for the fugitives, the Papua Police have deployed two Mobile Brigade (Brimob) teams and ordered all police officers in Keerom, Sentani and Jayapura to assist in the search and to shut access routes.
'The escaped inmates are criminals with strong violent instincts. They are extremely dangerous,' said Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw.
