AKARTA: President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo is scheduled to visit Belitung Island in Bangka Belitung province on March 9 to view the total solar eclipse that is expected to be visible from the island that day.
Bangka Belitung Governor Rustam Effendi said that he had worked with the Tourism Ministry to arrange the visit.
'We are optimistic that the President will be here for the extremely rare natural phenomenon,' he said as quoted by Antara.
The total solar eclipse, expected to last a little over two minutes, will be visible from Bangka Island at 6 a.m. and Belitung Island at 6:21 a.m.
The Indonesian government has scheduled various events and total solar eclipse tours in Bangka Belitung on March 9.
Indonesia will be one of few areas to see the total solar eclipse. The rest of the viewing points for it are total across the Pacific, heading toward Guam.
Indonesia last experienced a total solar eclipse in 1988, which was visible from Bangka Belitung and South Sumatra.
