resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited Central Java on Wednesday to inaugurate several revitalized traditional markets. It is the President’s third field visit on the same agenda after market inaugurations in West Nusa Tenggara and Papua last week.
During his visit to Central Java, Jokowi was set to inaugurate Manis market in Banyumas, Giwangretno market in Kebumen, and Krendetan market in Purworejo.
The government launched its traditional market revitalization program last year, aimed at revitalizing 5,000 markets within the five years of his term of office.
"The revitalization is not only physical improvement, but also managerial improvement," Jokowi said during his visit to Pharaa market in Sentani, Papua last week.
According to Trade Ministry data, the government has spent Rp 1.4 trillion (US$105.7 million) revitalizing 1,002 markets. This year, the ministry has identified 880 markets to be revitalized with a budget of Rp1.7 trillion.
Last week, Jokowi inaugurated Amahami market in West Nusa Tenggara. In Papua, Jokowi kicked-off construction of the Mama-mama market in Jayapura, and inaugurated Doyo market in Sentani. (ags)
