he National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) has called on the HJ hospital, where a mother claims one of her twins was stolen after a caesarean section, to explain as the case indicates baby trafficking.
Komnas PA chairman Arist Merdeka Sirait said he had received a report from Raudiah Elva Ningsih, 37, and an ultrasound image showing two fetuses from the Jatipadang community health center (Puskesmas) in South Jakarta and Budiasih Hospital in East Jakarta.
However, a representative of HJ hospital, according to Raudiah’s report, verbally stated that she only gave a birth to one baby, without providing documentation and proof.
"We suspect baby trafficking has taken place, because there has not been any clarification from the hospital or the doctors conducting the caesarean section," he said on Wednesday in his office in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.
In 2015, Komnas PA received 21 reports of similar cases, an increase from the 17 cases reported in 2014. "But this case is a bit different. Usually babies are kidnapped two or three days after birth, when they are put in incubators, not directly after birth," he said.
Therefore, the commission will seek further information from relevant parties, including from the Medical Council before taking the case to the police. "The general practitioners helping her with the ultrasound swear that the documents are valid," he said. (ags)
