yaukani Hassan Rais, a former regent of Kutai Kartanegara, died on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a hospital in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.
He was the first regent in the regency to win the post through a direct election in 2005 following the reform movement.
“Please forgive his wrongdoings,” Rita Widyasari, Syaukani’s daughter, wrote in a short message.
Rita, who is the current regent of Kutai Kartanegara, said her father had been rushed to Abdul Wahab Sjachranie Hospital on Saturday after suffering from a stroke.
He was treated there until his demise on Wednesday.
Syaukani was born on Nov. 11, 1948 in Tenggarong, Kutai, East Kalimantan.
Before serving as regent of Kutai Kartanegara, Syaukani was the regent of Kutai, a much bigger area encompassing the regencies of Kutai Kartanegara, East Kutai, West Kutai and Mahakam Ulu.
Syaukani was convicted in a graft case in 2008 involving land procurement for the development of a local airport.
He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail. The Supreme Court increased his sentence to six years. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono granted him an amnesty after Syaukani had served two years.
