n the wake of an assault on a teacher who had slapped a pupil in Makassar, South Sulawesi, the National Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) has urged parents and teachers to cooperate in the scholastic development of students and refrain from any violence.

"All forms violence must be avoided in the education of students," KPAI commissioner Rita Pranawati said on Friday, calling on parents not to overreact to accounts of violence against their children.

Separately, Paramadina University education expert Totok Amin Soefijanto said teachers must also learn to discipline their students without resorting to violence. As well as discipline, creativity in teaching methods is also needed to enhance the learning experience, Totok said, adding that violence would merely serve to exacerbate disciplinary issues.

A teacher at vocational school SMKN 2 Makassar named Dasrul, 52, was assaulted by a pupil, MAS, 15, and his father, Adnan Achmad, last week; Dasrul had previously slapped MAS' face when the latter responded with crude language to being reprimanded by Dasrul for not bringing drawing equipment to class. MAS then reported the incident to his father Adnan, who came to the school looking for Dasrul and struck him, abetted by his son. Local police have named both Adnan and MAS as suspects in the case for allegedly violating an article in the Criminal Code (KUHP) on assault. (rez/rin)
