C

ommunications and Information Minister Rudiantara has decided to scrap the bureaucratic procedures among government institutions to ensure swift action in blocking the spread of radical websites on the Internet.

Officials from the National Police, the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) could now just call the ministry's staff to block terrorism-related websites or dissemination of radical teachings via social media platforms without informing the minister.

"Terrorists never tell us about when or where they will launch an attack and therefore we cannot have bureaucratic procedures, we must get out from fixed systems [to prevent terrorism]," Rudiantara told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

He explained swift action was needed since radical content was abundantly spreading on social media and distributed privately among members of radical groups, adding that if the law enforcers were to cling onto bureaucratic procedures in blocking radical content, the actions taken to prevent radicalism would be slow and not very effective.

He asserted that the coordination between the National Police, BNPT, and BIN was of great importance to assist the government in addressing the dissemination of radical and terrorism-related content online. (bbn)
