Efforts increased to find missing victims of N. Maluku speedboat accident

ocal authorities of West Halmahera regency in North Maluku province deploy 157 people to search for two missing passengers of a speedboat accident over the weekend in Matui village of Jailolo subdistrict, an official said on Tuesday.

Two people are still missing, the National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said on Tuesday as reported by Antara.

In an effort to search for the victims, local authorities deployed 50 members of the West Halmahera Police, 17 personnel of Indonesian Military (TNI), 30 members of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), 30 personnel of National Search and Rescue and 30 local people to search for the missing people.

The search team combed the shore areas of Gorea, Matui and Tuada villages and the shores of Bobo Saria and Idamdehe villages, Martinus said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, four people had died from the accident. Three injured victims were taken to the Jailolo Regional Hospital while 47 others involved in the accident had returned to their respective homes.

The accident took place at 3:30 p.m as the speedboat transporting people from Jailolo to Ternate caught fire from its outboard engine. (rin)
