he Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has set up a team to handle a blasphemy case involving Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, after the case dossier was handed over by the National Police on Friday morning.
The AGO’s junior prosecutor for general crimes, Noor Rahmad, said he had appointed around 10 prosecutors to examine the case.
“We have appointed credible prosecutors with good quality and integrity. The prosecutors I appointed also have mixed religious backgrounds. They are both Christian and Muslim followers,” he told journalists at the AGO headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday.
Noor added that prosecutor Ali Mukartono would lead the team assigned to Ahok’s case. All of the prosecutors were committed to handling the case fairly, he said.
“We will be trying to be objective, fair and transparent. We are serious in handling this case," he said.
Ahok was named a suspect for blasphemy on Nov. 16 after citing a Quranic verse during a visit to Thousand Islands in late September. His speech triggered anger among Muslims who staged a large-scale rally on Nov. 4 despite the governor's apologies. (ebf)
