n response to the rampant circulation of false information, the National Police will set up a special multimedia division while developing their cyber department into a new unit.  Both departments will be led by one-star police officials.

National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said Friday that the National Police had made the proposal to help the police deal with recent developments regarding online media and social media amid the rampant circulation of fake news.

“Both of the new divisions, the multimedia bureau and the cybercrime directorate will focus on efforts to handle violations of the ITE [Electronic Information and Transactions] Law,” Martinus told reporters.

“The [new] bureau and the [new] directorate will collaborate with the national cyber agency to prevent and fight against fake news and unreliable information that spreads hate speech against racial and religious groups, as well as certain individuals,” he added.

National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian previously said the police would fully support the government’s plan to set up a national cyber agency to tackle all types of cybercrimes, which according to the police have been rising following high internet penetration in the country.

Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto has said he expects the soon-to-be established agency to start working by the end of the month. (dmr)
