he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named DW, an immigration attaché from the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, a suspect for allegedly accepting Rp 1 billion in bribes from Malaysian companies to issue passports and visas.
DW allegedly accepted the bribes from Malaysian companies to allow him to "reach out", whereby embassy officials process and overcharge for passport applications outside the embassy office. He is also suspected of overcharging for visas.
The commission is investigating the “reach out” passport case, which occurred in 2016, and overcharges for visas that occurred between 2013 to 2016.
“The commission has special interest in this case because some of the victims are migrant workers who work in Malaysia,” said KPK spokesperson Febri Diansyah.
The investigation is a joint effort between the KPK and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and has been ongoing since mid-2016.
Febri added that MACC would probe the Malaysian companies involved in the case and the KPK would investigate the suspected Indonesian nationals. (wit)
