East Java to compensate Ponorogo landslide victims

he East Java administration has promised to provide compensation for victims and people displaced by a landslide in Banaran village, Ponorogo regency, on April 1.
“We have asked Ponorogo Regent Ipong Muchlissoni to calculate the cost,” East Java Governor Soekarwo told reporters on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He, however, declined to give details of the total budget or the timeframe of the compensation.
Two bodies were found on Monday, while 26 are believed to be trapped beneath the debris. Some 300 residents were displaced.
Soekarwo said his administration and the Ponorogo regency administration accepted responsibility for the landslide.
He explained that the immediate issue was precautionary measures to avoid another landslide.
“We are discussing with the regent and the Disaster Mitigation Agency [BPBD] possible scenarios if another downpour occurs as the landslide blocked waterways, which can endanger residential areas,” the governor said.
The East Java administration, with the cooperation of Ponorogo regency, will build temporary housing for the victims.
Search and rescue activities continued on Monday using eight pieces of heavy equipment. Two more will be deployed to the site.
Soekarwo also gave assurances that the search would continue until everyone was accounted for. (mrc)
