ommunications and Information Minister Rudiantara has said the government is focusing on the construction of communications infrastructure and has set a target of each regency having internet access by 2019 and remote areas by 2021.

“By 2019 all capitals of districts and regencies across Indonesia should have broadband access,” said Rudiantara during the declaration of the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI) in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

He further said the country’s big population was a huge opportunity for the development of technology-based mass media. About 177 million of the population had at least one mobile phone, he added.

“Infrastructure is a challenge in Indonesia and we are going to focus not only on Java but also outside of Java,” Rudiantara said.

The minister said the government also planned to build a satellite network to connect remote islands across the archipelago.

In July, telecommunication developer PT Palapa Timur Telematika will commence the construction of a broadband network in eastern Indonesia under the Palapa Ring project.

The Rp 14 trillion (US$1.05 billion) Palapa Ring project comprises three sections – west, central and east – that will span 13,000 kilometers. It aims to expand domestic broadband service nationwide, particularly in frontier, outermost and remote regions. (dis/ebf)
