"[In the final days of May], we entered Ramadhan, quite different from last year when the fasting month started on June 6,” said BPS head Suhariyanto in a press conference.
Inflation in May was triggered by price increases for major food commodities such as garlic, chicken eggs, chicken, rice and beef, as well as other costs, which include electricity, fuel, airline fares and cigarettes.
The BPS believes the government will be able to increase food supplies during Ramadhan amid the price increases, which had been triggered by rising demand and inadequate supply.
Bank Indonesia targeted inflation this year to hover between 3 percent and 5 percent. (bbn)
