he Golkar Party has pledged to support the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) investigation into alleged bribery implicating Bengkulu Governor Ridwan Mukti, a member of Golkar.
Responding to Ridwan’s arrest on Tuesday, Golkar chairman Setya Novanto said he fully backed the legal process against the party’s cadre, who was reportedly offered Rp 1 billion (US$75,000) in bribes from businessmen.
Setya said he respected Ridwan’s move to resign from his position as governor, saying it was the best decision for the sake of the KPK’s investigation.
“We entrust [the handling of] the case to the KPK as we are upholding the supremacy of the law. Golkar will give legal assistance that may significantly help the investigation,” Setya said on Wednesday.
Setya, who is also the speaker of the House of Representatives, went on to remind cadres to refrain from engaging in corruption and nepotism, the same message Golkar executives delivered during the party’s national leadership meeting on May 21-23 in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
Ridwan, who was arrested on Tuesday alongside his wife Lily Maddari, is the third Bengkulu governor to be arrested by the KPK over corruption allegations. (ebf)
