In a letter written in his cell at the Mako Brimob detention center, Ahok expressed his gratitude for all those who sent him birthday greetings.
“I want to say that I’m grateful and pray for you, my brothers and sisters, that you will be successful and that the joy from God will always be with you,” Ahok wrote in the handwritten letter that he gave to his lawyer Teguh Samudera and later posted on his Instagram account @basukibtp.
As of Friday afternoon, the post has received 17,344 comments and 261,077 likes.
Well-wishers, including celebrities, have sent birthday messages and prayers to Ahok, among them current Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat.
Djarot said he hoped Ahok – Djarot’s former boss – could be patient and remain in good health while serving the rest of his two-year sentence.
Djarot said he would visit Ahok after welcoming former US president Barrack Obama, who is slated to land at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on Friday afternoon. (hol/dmr)
