Only nine of 20 former and active legislators summoned by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrived at the commission’s headquarters for questioning this week, as KPK investigators stepped up their probe into the alleged involvement of politicians in the e-ID case.

The KPK has said the focus of its investigation into the case has shifted to politicians, who are alleged to have received millions of dollars from businessmen to approve the Rp 5.9 trillion budget for the e-ID project.

The planned questioning of the politicians comes as the House of Representatives special committee on the KPK begins hunting for evidence to prove allegations that the commission breached the rights of people that it prosecuted, including more than 80 former legislators.

From Monday to Friday, 20 politicians were scheduled to undergo questioning at the headquarters of the KPK. House Speaker Setya Novanto and Agun Gunandjar, his fellow Golkar Party colleague, were among those summoned by the commission.

Agun, who leads the House’s inquiry into the KPK, failed to show up on Thursday as he was visiting Sukamiskin prison to interview graft convicts who claim to have been wronged by the antigraft body.

Setya also failed to answer the summons, citing health problems. “Setya has been suffering from vertigo for the past four days,” House secretary-general Hani Tahapary said on Friday. He added that the House speaker had informed investigators of his absence by sending a signed letter.

KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah confirmed that investigators had received the letter. “We received the letter, along with a letter from a physician detailing Setya’s illness.”
