The Jakarta Tax Agency is looking to up the pressure on well-off celebrities that it believes are not paying their fair share.

The agency had gathered information on a list of celebrities that had fallen behind on their tax obligations and was planning to visit them at their houses, agency head Edi Sumantri said on Sunday.

“We will conduct [the visits] in the near future,” he said on Sunday, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

His team would be escorted by members of the Jakarta Traffic Police when visiting the celebrities’ houses. He said he was certain they would not dodge the officials, as the operation might take place early in the morning, when the celebrities were about to start their activities.

Furthermore, they could not avoid their obligation either, as the agency had made calculations showing that the alleged tax-evading celebrities were quite capable of paying their taxes.

Most of them had tax arrears for their luxurious cars, Edi added.

Local media reported that the celebrities targeted by the agency were among those included on a list of the richest celebrities compiled by the magazine Forbes Indonesia.

The Jakarta Tax Agency has announced plans to crack down on vehicle tax evaders that have fallen behind on their tax payments in order to boost city revenues. The agency’s records show arrears on taxes for 4.7 million vehicles, including some 1,700 luxury cars of around 4,000 registered. (rin)
