P

olice in Bekasi, West Java, have arrested a man suspected of firing a flare that killed a fan during a friendly soccer match between Indonesia and Fiji held at Patriot Candrabaga Stadium in the city.

Bekasi Police chief Sr. Comr. Hero Bachtiar said the suspect, identified only as 25-year-old ARP, was arrested at his house in Cimuning, Mustika Jaya in Bekasi.

“After developing an investigation, we managed to arrest the suspect last night,” Hero said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

At the time of the arrest, Hero said, ARP was still in possession of a flare, which he bought online.

A video of the incident uploaded to the internet helped the authorities to identify the suspect and subsequently arrest him, Hero added.

The flare appeared to hit Catur Yuliantono, 32, who died on the way to Mitra Keluarga Hospital on Saturday. The incident occurred in the last minutes of the match, which ended in a scoreless draw.

ARP has been charged under Article 359 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on negligence leading to death, which carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison. (fac)
