President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has highlighted the importance of cooperation in the development of the digital economy during a joint press statement with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Following a bilateral meeting held at the Istana in Singapore on Thursday, Jokowi noted that the bulk of the two leaders' conversation had been on future cooperation between the two countries, including in the development of the digital economy.

"Cooperation in the digital economy is not just an option, it is now imperative. This will be a priority for Indonesia and Singapore," he said.

“If we can combine the potential of investment, technology, talent and the market potential of youths, cooperation in the digital economy will make the economies of Indonesia and Singapore even stronger.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lee said that since last year's Leader's Retreat, there had been much progress in investment, skills training and digital economy cooperation.

"We discussed areas where we can deepen our bilateral cooperation," he said during the same joint press statement. In addition to the bilateral meeting, the two leaders oversaw the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoU) on education, vocational training and disaster risk mitigation. (bbn)
