n explosion at NTPC’s coal-fired power plant in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has claimed 29 lives while 85 people have been injured, in one of the nation’s worst industrial disasters in recent years.
The explosion occurred on the afternoon of Nov. 1 at the newly-commissioned 500-megawatt unit of the plant, releasing gases and steam, India’s biggest electricity producer said in an emailed statements. NTPC has shut the affected unit, while the rest of the plant is operating, it said in the statement. The plant has a total coal-fired capacity of 1,550 megawatts.
The 500-megawatt unit started commercial generation in September. NTPC has a total capacity of 51.7 gigawatts, almost 16 percent of India’s total 329.3 gigawatts capacity.
The injured are being treated at local hospitals, the company said. India reported 809 accidental explosion incidents in 2015, causing 831 deaths, federal home ministry data show.
