T

he Jakarta Police named on Friday private television station MetroTV journalist Hilman Mattauch a suspect of reckless driving that led to graft suspect and House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto being sustaining injuries.

Hilman was reportedly behind the wheel of the car taking the Golkar Party chairman to the MetroTV studio for an interview when the accident occurred.

“Yes, he is a suspect. We also ticketed him,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said as quoted by tribunnews.com in Jakarta on Friday.

Hilman has been charged under Traffic Law articles 283 and 310 on reckless driving, which carry a maximum three-month jail sentence.

“As the charge carries less than five years, we don’t need to detain him,” Argo said.

He went on to say that the police were collecting more evidence, such as pieces of broken windshield and scratches on the utility pole hit by the car. The police have not as yet determined whether it was really an accident or happened by design, he said.

Argo said the car belonged to Hilman and was bought about one year ago.

Setya is currently undergoing medical treatment and is being closely monitored by KPK investigators. (foy/ebf)
