he Jakarta administration has decided to scrap fines for recalcitrant taxpayers as long as they pay their tax arrears within a certain period, an official has said.
City tax agency head Edi Sumantri said his office would scrap fines for vehicle tax (PKB) and vehicle-ownership transfer fee (BBN-KB) evasion for a month from Nov. 20 to Dec. 20 this year. Taxpayers only need to voluntarily come to the Vehicle Document Registration Center (Samsat) to pay the unpaid tax.
"If taxpayers who have yet to pay the PKB and BBN-KB taxes do so before December 20, we will not charge the 48 percent tax penalty," Edi said at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that during the one-month grace period, his agency would team up with the police to conduct on-street operations against recalcitrant taxpayers. Anyone caught in these operations would not be eligible for the fine waiver.
The agency will also carry out door-to-door operations to hunt taxpayers. The amount of unpaid tax from PKB and BBN-KB amounted to Rp 1.8 trillion (US$133 million), Edi said.
"I hope, citizens can pay the tax now instead of getting caught in the door-to-door operations," he said. (fac)
