tornado has wreaked havoc in Banyumas regency, Central Java and floodwaters have inundated houses in neighboring Cilacap regency, amid the stormy weather that has struck Java Island recently.

The tornado destroyed at least 60 houses and caused dozens of trees to fall down. No casualties were recorded from the incident but the fallen trees blocked road access to several villages in the regency.

In Cilacap, dozens of houses located in coastal areas of Cilacap subdistrict, South Cilacap district, were inundated by tidal waves reaching 1.5 to two meters in height.

“The tidal floods came in really quickly. Residents ran from their houses to evacuate fearing bigger floods,” Joko Priyanto, the head of Cilacap subdistrict said on Monday.

Meanwhile in Pekanbaru, Riau province, Sumatra, the Siak River that passes through the capital city overflowed flooding the three districts of Rumbai, Tenayan Raya and Payung Sekaki, according to data from the Pekanbaru Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD). More than 1,500 people and 545 houses were affected by the floods.

Evacuation and Rescue head at the BPBD Ibas Sembiring said that flooding this year had been worse than last year. In addition to implementing evacuation measures, local authorities have also opened soup kitchens and provided healthcare services for evacuees.
