ndonesia is seeking to offer support and strengthen the resolve of allies in the Middle East and Europe in a week full of important meetings following increasing tension between Israel and Palestine.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi announced early on Sunday ahead of her flight to Jordan that she would be meeting some of her counterparts to “strengthen their resolve in supporting” the Palestinian agenda.
Retno is expected to meet Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Al-Maliki in Amman to discuss the situation in the aftermath of the United States’ endorsement of Jerusalem as the capital Israel.
US President Donald Trump unilaterally declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday and vowed to move the US embassy there, a gesture that was met with global condemnation and sparked unrest in Palestine.
Safadi, who acts on behalf of Jordanian King Abdullah II, has called Trump’s decision “very dangerous.” The Hashemite king is the royal custodian of Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian shrines.
He and Retno will engage in “consultations in preparation for an extraordinary summit” of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Indonesian envoy to Jordan and Palestine Andy Rachmianto told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
Andy said the two might discuss Jordan’s five-point plan on Jerusalem, which was first introduced on Saturday during an Arab League Ministerial Council rallying in support of Palestine.
