tate-owned toll road operator Jasa Marga has forecast that around 78,000 vehicles will use the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road in the Cikampek direction on Christmas Eve, a 30 percent increase from normal traffic at 60,000 vehicles.

"The peak of the holiday exodus traffic was on Friday, with 80,000 vehicles leaving Jakarta, up 3.62 percent compared to the normal traffic of 78,000 vehicles," Jasa Marga spokesperson Dwimawan Heru said in a statement.

He added that the traffic continued to increase on Saturday with 84,000 vehicles passing through the Cikarang Utama tollgate, which was up 13.05 percent compared with normal traffic at 75,000 vehicles.

Meanwhile, around 68,000 vehicles passed through the gate on Thursday.

Between Thursday and Saturday, up to 234,000 vehicles left Jakarta for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

"The traffic volume has reached 234,000 vehicles in the last four days, up 4 percent from normal traffic volume of 225,000 vehicles," he said.

Dwimawan called on motorists to ensure that vehicles were in good condition and to top up electronic payment cards before entering the toll road. (ahw)
