Data analysis firm Nielsen Indonesia has stated that tobacco companies spent about Rp 5.4 trillion (US$378 million) on advertisements, from a total advertisement spending of Rp 145 trillion across industries in 2017.
Nielsen Indonesia media research executive director Hellen Katherina said tobacco firms’ advertisement expenditure fell by 17 percent compared to 2016, despite an 8 percent increase in total advertisement spending on various products.
The increase was driven by the higher gross advertisement rates set by the media, she said on Thursday as reported by tempo.co.
Meanwhile, television companies received 80 percent of the tobacco firms’ advertisement budget, or a 12 percent increase from the previous year, but advertisement spending for print media saw a downward trend.
Hellen said fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products consisted the largest portion of advertisement spending, with personal care products topping the list of spenders.
Advertisement for personal care products totaled Rp 24.9 trillion, followed by beverages (Rp 21.6 trillion) and food (Rp 19.1 trillion), she added.
Telecommunications and property firms had the largest advertisement budget in the non-FMCG category, with Rp 13.3 trillion and 4.1 trillion, respectively. (kmt/bbn)
