oreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi received on Tuesday the UNESCO certificate designating South Sulawesi’s phinisi boatbuilding a part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
“The designation of the phinisi boatbuilding arts as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage is a matter of great pride for Indonesians,” Retno said as quoted in a press release issued by the Foreign Ministry. “However, it is not the end goal but only a means to preserve national culture.”
The certificate of the designation, with was made on Dec. 17, was presented to Retno by the Indonesian Ambassador to Paris Hotmangaradja Pandjaitan, who is also accredited to the Paris-based UNESCO, on the sidelines of a four-day meeting of the heads of all Indonesian diplomatic missions.
Retno said every UNESCO designation should be followed up by good conservation policy.
UNESCO has already designated eight other examples of intangible cultural heritage in Indonesia: kris, wayang puppet performances, batik, batik-making training, the angklung bamboo musical instrument, Saman dance from Aceh, three genres of Balinese dance and the traditional noken woven bag from Papua.
For 2018, Indonesia is jointly working with Malaysia to nominate Pantun poetry and aims to nominate pencak silat martial arts in 2019.
