T

hree suspected hackers from the Surabaya Black Hat (SBH) cybercriminal gang, which allegedly hacked the websites of Indonesian businesses and the Los Angeles city administration, are IT students of a university in Surabaya, East Java, the police have said.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said the cybercriminal gang had around 600 to 700 members spread across Indonesia and that the arrest of the three suspects marked the beginning of a bigger revelation.

“There are six main suspects that we should catch; we’ve managed to arrest three of them. They’re all students aged less than 21 years old,” he said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

They had allegedly hacked 600 local and international websites from 40 countries to access data for a blackmail scheme.

The hackers, Argo added, would be charged under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years' imprisonment. (vla)
