ransportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has urged the management of Garuda Indonesia and its pilots to continue talks regarding the pilots' strike that was initially planned to be held during the Idul Fitri peak holiday season.

Budi said he had heard from the national flag carrier that the pilots would postpone their planned strike.

“I received a report from the Garuda Indonesia president director [Pahala Mansury] that the pilots have postponed their plan to strike. I hope the communication will continue,” the minister said on Sunday at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten as quoted by kompas.com.

Budi said he would meet on Monday with the pilots' representatives along with Pahala in hopes that the pilots would cancel their planned strike. “If both sides [engage in] introspection, there will be a way out and such strike would not take place,” he added.

The Garuda Indonesia Pilots Association (APG) and the Garuda Labor Union (Sekarga) had announced earlier that they would work as usual during the Idul Fitri holiday and postpone their strike.

Sekarga head Ahmad Irfan Nasution said that the labor union's representatives would inform the public about the exact time of the strike seven days before the event.

The APG and Sekarga threatened to strike unless the government stepped in to help resolve "managerial problems" at the flag carrier that they alleged were causing the continued decline in the company's performance. (bbn)
