T

he Jakarta Police have denied the city administration’s claim that the police had agreed to keeping Jl. Jatibaru Raya in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, closed until the construction of a sky bridge that will connect the train station with Tanah Abang Market.

The head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Andri Yansyah, said previously that the agency had met with the police to talk about the plan to build the sky bridge.

Andri claimed the police had agreed to the city administration’s plan to maintain the closure of the street for cars in the morning and afternoon until the sky bridge was finished and ready to accommodate street vendors.

Jakarta Police traffic unit director Sr. Comr. Yusuf confirmed that the city administration had talked to the police about the planned sky bridge.

However, the police, he said, did not see the construction project as a reason to close the street.

“It’s not a problem if the city administration wants to build a sky bridge, but the street shall be used in accordance with its function,” Yusuf said on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Previously, the police said they would give the Jakarta administration a warning if it failed to heed the police’s recommendation to review the decision to keep the road closed after the Idul Fitri holiday.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan closed Jl. Jatibaru Raya for motorists from morning until the afternoon on Dec. 22. No cars can pass the area, which is filled with street vendors, at that time. The Transjakarta Tanah Abang Explorer, meanwhile, is allowed to operate.

In January, the Jakarta police urged the administration to review the policy. (cal)
