he Pulogadung Police have shot dead an alleged begal (violent robber), identified as Raka Jari Yanto, 21, who reportedly often committed robbery in Pulogadung, East Jakarta.
Raka was arrested by the police after he allegedly tried to steal a mobile phone owned by Untung Parulian Situmorang, 20, who was sitting on the side of Jl. Cipinang Baru Raya on Tuesday.
Pulogadung Police chief Comr. Sukadi said on Thursday Raka had approached Untung on a motorcycle driven by his friend, Aang Ika.
In addition to stealing the phone, Raka also allegedly attacked Untung with a sickle after he refused to hand over his phone.
Untung suffered injuries to his back and thighs as a result of the attack.
Some residents who saw the incident tried to help Untung and captured Raka, who was then taken to the police station. Aang escaped from the scene.
Sukadi said Raka was uncooperative when the police asked him to lead them to Aang’s house.
“Raka tried to grab a police officer’s weapon. We saw that he could threaten the safety of the police officers. The police fired a warning shot, but he paid no heed, so the police shot him in his chest,” Sukadi said on Thursday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
Previously, the Bekasi Police handed out awards to friends Mohamad Irfan Bahri and Ahmad Rafiki, both 19, for fighting off two alleged begal on the Summarecon Bekasi overpass in West Java.
Similar to the case in Pulogadung, the begal tried to steal a mobile phone and attacked the victims with sickle. (cal)
