number of areas in South and East Jakarta were inundated on Monday after rain continuously hit the city from the early hours of the morning.
According to the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), at least five neighborhood units (RTs) in the municipalities were affected.
Floodwater from the overflowing Ciliwung river reached as high as 80 centimeters. The areas inundated included East Pejaten in South Jakarta and Cawang, Kampung Melayu and Jatinegara in East Jakarta.
Jatinegara district head Nasrudin Abu Bakar said several areas in the vicinity had been affected since 4 a.m., adding that no areas had been evacuated.
"So far, there have not been any evacuations. We will keep monitoring the situation. The city administration needs to immediately manage the [riverbanks] by installing sheet piles. Otherwise, we'll see more flooding," he said as reported by kompas.com.
The floods reportedly receded after a few hours. (fac)
