ice President Jusuf Kalla was formally invited to attend the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) in Iran in October, according to a formal letter by Iranian leader Hasan Rouhani delivered directly to Kalla on Wednesday.
Iran’s vice president for women and family affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar, met with Kalla in Jakarta to deliver the president’s invitation, said Ali Pahlevani, press attaché at the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta.
Both senior government officials also talked about recent developments in the Iran nuclear deal, a point that was raised in another personal letter from Rouhani to the Indonesian Vice President.
“They talked about developments in bilateral and international relations, such as support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action [JCPOA],” he told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Indonesia has previously voiced support for the JCPOA — otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal — saying it was the only way the international community could monitor the country’s peaceful use of nuclear power.
Jakarta issued the statement following a threat by United States President Donald Trump to withdraw from the landmark deal, which it eventually did. The US signed the JCPOA in 2015 under the Barack Obama administration.
Trump has accused Tehran of misusing the proceeds from the lifting of the economic sanctions imposed on the republic, which it denies.
Before her meeting with Kalla, Ebtekar met with Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, in which they discussed the results of a recent JCPOA joint commission ministerial in Vienna, Austria.
