embers of the Network of Urban Poor (JRMK) and Jakarta Pedicab Driver Union (Sebaja) staged a protest in front of City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday.
They demanded that Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan remain in his current position and not participate as a candidate in the 2019 presidential election.
The crowd brought banners emphasizing their collective hope to see Anies complete his five-year term as governor.
Most of the protesters consisted of women who brought their children along.
The protest channeled the people's aspirations to have Anies stay on as governor, JRMK coordinator Eny said.
"The first eight months of his administration went without a hitch. However, we didn't elect Pak Anies as governor for only eight months, but for five years," she added as quoted by kompas.com.
Some of the governor's programs, such as the village planning project and official permits for pedicab drivers, have been supportive of the poverty-stricken demographic in the capital, Eny added.
"We don't want Pak Anies to make the same move that Jokowi made [in the 2014 presidential election]," she said, referring to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. (rfa)
