A team of Indonesian youths from the University of Indonesia (UI) earned second place in the long-distance category of the international competition HYDROcontest, held at St. Tropez in southern France from Sept. 2 to 9, barely losing to competitors from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
Teams from three Indonesian universities took part in this contest representing the nation: UI, Diponegoro University Semarang and 10 November Institute of Technology. In addition to representing Indonesia, these three teams also represented Asia in this competition, which featured a total of 31 teams from 15 countries.
The Indonesian teams took part in three categories: mass transportation, private boats and long distance. The Hydros Foundation, which organized this event, supplied each participating team with an electrical engine. Each contestant was given several months in advance to plan and build one or two ships, with a maximum dimension of 2.5 by 2.5 by 2 meters.
HydroContest is a big university competition tackling maritime energy efficiency. The 2018 contest was part of an ambitious project aiming to promote maritime innovation in St. Tropez.
