campaign official of the Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin presidential election ticket claims that 22 regional heads in religiously conservative West Java are backing the incumbent candidate.
“This is personal support,” Dedi Mulyadi, who chairs the pair’s West Java campaign, said as quoted by Antara on Friday.
Dedi said that in only five regions did the regent or mayor did not back Jokowi. They are Bogor city, Sukabumi, Karawang regency, Bandung city and Depok.
West Java is known to be a religiously conservative province and was a stronghold of rival candidate Prabowo Subianto in the 2014 presidential election.
In 2014, Jokowi won both Central Java and East Java by more than 6 percentage points but lost by landslides in Banten and West Java, with Prabowo gaining almost 60 percent of the vote in both provinces. (ahw)
