T

he Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) has suspended the nation's top-tier soccer league, Liga 1, for an indefinite period following the killing of a Persija Jakarta fan at the hands of supporters of rival team Persib Bandung over the weekend.

PSSI chairman Edy Rahmayadi said the suspension would last until a thorough investigation into the death of Persija fan Haringga Sirila was completed.

“We have to make sure the diagnosis is correct before we take action,” said Edy.

Haringga was beaten to death near the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api stadium in Bandung shortly before the Persija-Persib match on Sunday. A video of the mob killing circulated online and sparked national outrage.

The soccer match proceeded despite the incident, with a 3-2 victory for Persib.

Edy, who also serves as North Sumatra governor, said the association’s disciplinary commission would hold a meeting soon to determine sanctions to be imposed on Persib.

“We have rules, there will be sanctions, starting from the lightest, like a reprimand, to a fine or even disqualification,” Edy said. (nor/ahw)
