Kaskus launches original video service

ndonesia’s biggest internet forum, Kaskus, is diving right into the visual content market’s heart with Kaskus TV, a video hosting site that offers original content to cement its place in the fast-paced digital age.

Officially launched on Thursday, the service currently offers 45 different programs with over 200 hours of video, sprawled over 10 subject matters, from music, to film, toy collections, animals, food and many others.

With the site’s role throughout the years as one of the most important and significant online meeting points for Indonesians online, the provision of a video service that is led by community and general interest tastemakers is seen by the company as taking their ethos to the next level.

Kaskus TV will be integrated with the Kaskus main website, which has served the online Indonesian public for the past 19 years.

A beta version of Kaskus TV has been online since August as a way for the company to test the ground. Among the programs being shown include Bermusik, a music discussion series by music observer Adib Hidayat, which he claims has already attracted 250,000 viewers. Among his guest stars are big name Indonesian acts such as Dipha Barus, Armand Maulana and Ari Lasso.

More ambitious projects are also being created for the service thanks to Kaskus’ partnership with outlets such as Narasi.TV, SuperMusic, DailySocial, Opini.id, Endeus.TV and film production company Visinema.

Kaskus TV will also features short film series, such as film director Angga Dimas Sasongko’s new original Arah (Direction).

Arah is being framed as a story about a group of guys who start a band and the various struggles they go through to make it big. The series’ story is based on the lore surrounding the success of American rock band The Doors, inspired particularly by the struggles of troubled front man Jim Morrison. To enhance the experience, Angga explains that the series will have a presence in real life.

“To make the series a more meaningful experience, I plan for the band to make and release their own music and play shows and go on tour, if possible,” the Filosofi Kopi director elaborated.

Kaskus’ famed hobby and general communities will also be represented through their own series on the service; exotic pets enthusiasts can revel in a program hosted by the IndoExoticPets community, motorcycle enthusiasts will be spoiled with a vlogging program lead by KASKUS Motovloggers, while those in the toy collectors’ community can bask in analysis and information from groups such as AToyz.

Because communities and university students make up a big chunk of Kaskus’ visitors, the company is confident that Kaskus TV will be a success.

“The Kaskus TV platform is an auditorium where everyone of any interest can come and discuss and gather,” explains Kaskus CEO Edi Taslim.

“We want to serve these communities by providing them with the platform to share their opinions and discussions as a sign that we appreciate their content and their interests.”

Edi added that Kaskus had long provided an auditorium for enthusiasts to gather and discuss. To further accommodate programs, Kaskus also provides a complete studio not only for program organizers to use but also for any “kaskuser” that succeeds in pitching a program idea.
