he Jakarta administration opened on Monday evening Jl. Jatibaru Raya in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, after it was closed to accommodate street vendors for the past several months.
The opening lured both public and private vehicles to use the road underneath the unfinished Tanah Abang sky bridge and caused traffic congestion on Tuesday morning.
However, some construction workers were still busy working there. Some of them said they were working to widen the road.
Other workers were seen loading road separators onto a truck owned by Jakarta Bina Marga road agency. Other materials like sacks of cement and iron sheets were scattered on the road and sidewalks.
“The road is too narrow,” said angkot (public minivan) driver Otong as quoted by tempo.co.
Previously, PD Pembangunan Sarana Jaya president director Yoory Pinontoan said the company was working to clean up the area.
“The road might be closed again, depending on the urgency,” Yoory said.
The sky bridge is still unfinished, as the railing around the bridge is incomplete.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan last year closed and reserved a section of the road for street vendors. The decision sparked a public outcry, with the Indonesian Ombudsman saying it was a case of maladministration as it violated national traffic laws on road functions. (vla)
