Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan was one of three city leaders who received an honorary guest title from the Buenos Aires legislature for his participation in the Urban 20 (U20) Global Summit.
akarta Governor Anies Baswedan received an honorary guest title from the Buenos Aires legislature for his participation in the Urban 20 (U20) Global Summit.
Besides Anies, the mayor of Asuncion, Paraguay, Mario Ferreiro, and the mayor of Montevideo, Uruguay, Daniel Martinez, received the same title.
"It is an honor to receive the honorary guest title. From all U20 participants, only three got the title," Anies said in a press release on Wednesday.
Anies said he hoped cooperation between cities could be strengthened in the future.
In the summit, which was held from Oct. 29 to 30, Anies spoke about the challenges of building public trust and involving residents through community action plans.
“The government tries to transform the bureaucracy, from being a facilitator to collaborator,” said acting head of the Jakarta Communication, Information and Statistics Agency, Atika Nur Rahmania.
According to Atika, Anies discussed kampung planning through community action plans.
Anies also held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event, including with Mark Watts, the executive director of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, to talk about Jakarta’s commitment to lowering greenhouse emissions to 30 percent in 2030.
Deputy head of the Buenos Aires Council, Francisco Quintana, said he hoped that with cooperation with other cities, including Jakarta, Buenos Aires could create better public policy in the future.
"U20 summits can be a tool for us to promote measures to make our cities cleaner, more inclusive, stronger and more prosperous," Quintana said. (cal/gis)
