tate-owned construction company Wijaya Karya (Wika) has announced that it has won development contracts in 10 countries: Algeria, Malaysia, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, the Philippines, Senegal, Taiwan, Timor Leste and the United Arab Emirates.

"We will develop 5,000 houses in Algeria, Kinman Bridge in Taiwan and the Presidential Palace in Niger. We want to do our best to complete the projects,” said Wika president director Tumiyana recently when sending off the 311 Wika workers to the three countries.

Tumiyana said that Wika had sent 963 of its workers to manage its overseas projects this year, and that it planned to send 3,500 workers in 2019.

He said the company needed to send more workers abroad because Wika would be handling more projects like the construction of a tin smelter in Nigeria, the Bateen Al Samar housing complex in the UAE, Limbang Bridge in Malaysia, Clarin Bridge in the Philippines, Maubin Myapon road repairs in Myanmar and five other projects in Timor Leste.

The Timor Leste projects include the Oecusse Ambeno Airport expansion, the Comoro Bridge development and the Natarbora and Manututu road projects.

Sunday's send-off for the Indonesian workers was attended by State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Rini Soemarno, SOEs Ministry business restructuring and development undersecretary Aloysius Kiik Ro and Wika president commissioner Imam Santoso.

“We are proud of you who have been selected as our nation’s ambassadors, who have been selected to work with Wika [in] representing Indonesia in managing [our] projects abroad,” Rini said in her speech at the same event. (bbn)
