A group of people calling themselves the State Asset Rescue Committee staged a rally in front of the Granadi building in South Jakarta on Monday, demanding that authorities seize assets owned by the now-defunct Supersemar Foundation, which was set up by former president Soeharto, kompas.com reported.
“We, the State Asset Rescue Committee, which is made up of various elements of the public, demand that the Supersemar Foundation as well as other foundations established by the New Order regime that stored [illicit assets] of Soeharto’s cronies to immediately return them,” a protester said.
The South Jakarta District Court seized the Granadi building, owned by Soeharto’s family also known as the Cendana family, in relation to the misuse of the foundation’s funds.
The confiscation is part of efforts to execute a Supreme Court verdict that ordered the foundation to pay a fine of Rp 4.4 trillion (US$302 million) after it was found guilty of misusing scholarship funds.
The Supersemar case dates back to 2008, when the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) filed a lawsuit at the South Jakarta District Court accusing the Soeharto family and the foundation of misusing scholarship funds by diverting them to family owned companies.
The court found the foundation guilty and ordered it to pay a penalty.
The Supreme Court upheld the decision in 2010 and demanded that the foundation pay $315 million and Rp 139.2 billion, which had a combined value of Rp 4.4 trillion at the time.
On Monday, another group called Hasta Mahardika Soehartonesia (HMS), who claimed to be Soeharto supporters, also came to the Granadi building to oppose the first group’s campaign.
